In Tuscaloosa, Alabama football is more than a sport—it is a tradition, an identity and a way of life every fall. On home-game weekends, thousands of fans pour into Tuscaloosa, restaurants and hotels fill up, and Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium once again becomes the center of the college football world. With that tradition comes enormous expectations. At Alabama, simply having a winning season is never enough. Fans expect the Crimson Tide to compete for an SEC Championship and, at minimum, reach the College Football Playoff.
That makes the 2026 Alabama football season especially important for head coach Kalen DeBoer. Alabama improved to 11-4 in 2025, reached the SEC Championship Game and made the College Football Playoff, defeating Oklahoma in the opening round before losing to eventual national champion Indiana in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal. DeBoer is 20-8 through his first two seasons, and Alabama extended his contract through January 2033. Still, expectations in Tuscaloosa are unlike almost anywhere else in college football. If Alabama were to miss the playoff completely in 2026, expect the pressure—and the hot-seat conversation surrounding DeBoer—to increase considerably.
Where Does Alabama Football Rank Entering the 2026 Season?
Alabama enters 2026 in an unusual position: still loaded with talent, but not viewed nationally as one of the automatic top-five teams.
The Crimson Tide begins the season ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25, well within striking distance of the playoff but lower than Alabama fans have grown accustomed to seeing in the preseason.
Recruiting, however, remains one of Alabama's biggest strengths. Alabama's 2026 recruiting class finished among the top six nationally across the major recruiting services and reached as high as No. 3 according to 247Sports, according to Alabama's official football personnel information. That talent pipeline remains a major reason Alabama can reload even after sending another large group of players to the NFL.
The bigger concern is experience.
According to Athlon Sports' returning-starter criteria, Alabama brings back just five starters from 2025—one on offense and four on defense. That is one of the lowest totals among teams expected to contend for the College Football Playoff.
In other words, the 2026 Crimson Tide may have plenty of stars, but many of them will be stepping into much larger roles.
Is Keelon Russell Alabama's Starting Quarterback in 2026?
Yes. Alabama has officially named Keelon Russell the starting quarterback for the 2026 season, and he may ultimately determine just how high this team's ceiling can be.
Russell was one of the most highly regarded quarterback recruits in the country. The former five-star prospect played sparingly behind Ty Simpson in 2025, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while also showing his ability to create with his legs.
Now the job belongs to him.
At 6-foot-3 and more than 200 pounds, Russell gives offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb a quarterback capable of attacking defenses through the air while extending plays outside the pocket. His athletic ability could be particularly important because Alabama must replace four starters along the offensive line.
Russell does not need to become a Heisman Trophy candidate immediately. Alabama needs him to protect the football, make smart decisions and improve as the schedule gets tougher.
If he develops quickly, Alabama's preseason No. 13 ranking could look very low by October.
New Alabama Football Coaches and Transfer Portal Players for 2026
Kalen DeBoer made several important coaching changes entering the season.
Derrick Nix joined Alabama to coach the wide receivers after spending 2024 and 2025 at Auburn and previously coaching at Ole Miss. Adrian Klemm takes over the offensive line after coaching at USC, Oregon and in the NFL. Alabama also added Richard Owens to coach tight ends after three seasons working with Louisville's offensive line.
Klemm's addition may be particularly important. Alabama's offensive line and running game must improve if this offense is going to take pressure off its young quarterback.
The transfer portal also helped Alabama add experience to a roster with significant turnover.
Some of the most notable additions include wide receiver Noah Rogers from NC State, tight end Josh Ford from Oklahoma State, linebacker Caleb Woodson from Virginia Tech and offensive lineman Jayvin James from Mississippi State. Rogers had 33 catches for 441 yards for NC State in 2025, while Woodson brings 152 career tackles from his time at Virginia Tech.
Players such as defensive lineman Devan Thompkins and edge defender Desmond Umeozulu also add options to a defense replacing experienced contributors.

Alabama plays 12 regular-season games in 2026 with seven games in Tuscaloosa and five on the road. The Crimson Tide also has an open date on October 31 before traveling to LSU.

For SEC television windows, Early means approximately 11 a.m.-noon CT, Night means 5-7 p.m. CT, and Flex means either the afternoon or night window. Additional kickoff times and television assignments will be announced as the season progresses.
What Are Alabama's Toughest Games in 2026?
The heart of Alabama's schedule could decide the entire season.
Beginning October 10, Alabama faces Georgia, Tennessee and Texas A&M in three consecutive weeks before the October 31 bye. The Tide then travels to Baton Rouge to play LSU.
Georgia may be the biggest home game of the season. The Bulldogs enter 2026 ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP poll, and a victory over Georgia could immediately change the national perception of Alabama.
The road games at Tennessee and LSU may be equally important. Winning consistently in Knoxville and Baton Rouge is difficult regardless of rankings.
Texas A&M, ranked No. 8 in the preseason, comes to Tuscaloosa for Alabama's Homecoming game on October 24.
Which Alabama Games Could Become Upset Traps?
The obvious games are not always the most dangerous.
Kentucky on September 12 deserves attention. It is Alabama's second game of the season, Russell's first SEC road start and an early test for a rebuilt offensive line.
Mississippi State on October 3 could also be dangerous because it falls just one week before the highly anticipated Georgia game.
And nobody around Alabama should overlook Vanderbilt after the Commodores shocked the Crimson Tide in 2024. The 2026 meeting is in Nashville and comes one week after the LSU game.
Those are exactly the types of games a playoff contender cannot afford to lose.
Can Alabama Fix Its Running Game in 2026?
This may be the most important offensive question outside of quarterback.
Alabama averaged only 104.1 rushing yards per game and 3.4 yards per carry in 2025. For a program historically known for controlling the line of scrimmage and producing NFL running backs, that production was nowhere near Alabama's traditional standard.
Daniel Hill, AK Dear and Kevin Riley give Alabama returning options, but five-star freshman EJ Crowell may be the name fans quickly learn.
Crowell rushed for an incredible 2,632 yards and 35 touchdowns on 209 carries during his final high-school season before joining Alabama.
The combination of Adrian Klemm coaching the offensive line, Richard Owens bringing additional blocking experience to the tight-end room and Alabama potentially using more multiple-tight-end formations could help restore balance.
Alabama does not necessarily need to become the most dominant rushing team in the SEC. But it cannot ask Russell to carry the entire offense every Saturday.
How Good Will Alabama's Defense Perform in 2026?
The defense could be the strength of this football team, particularly early in the season.
Alabama allowed just 169.9 passing yards per game in 2025, and four of Athlon's five returning starters are on defense.
The secondary should be one of the most talented units on the roster, led by players including Dijon Lee Jr. and Keon Sabb. Yhonzae Pierre gives Alabama an experienced presence on the edge, while Caleb Woodson is expected to step into a major role at inside linebacker after transferring from Virginia Tech.
Kane Wommack's defense may need to carry Alabama through portions of September while Russell and the rebuilt offensive line gain experience.
If the defensive front holds up against SEC rushing attacks, this unit has the talent to become one of the better defenses in college football.
2026 Alabama Football Prediction: Will Alabama Make the College Football Playoff?
Our prediction: Alabama finishes the regular season 9-3, with 10-2 absolutely within reach.
The biggest variable is Keelon Russell.
If Russell plays beyond his years, the offensive line develops quickly and Alabama finally establishes a legitimate running game, the Crimson Tide could beat several of Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M and LSU and climb back into the national top 10.
A 10-2 Alabama team should be in strong position for the College Football Playoff.
At 9-3, things become much more interesting. The Tide's strength of schedule could keep Alabama in playoff consideration, but three losses would likely place them closer to the playoff bubble than the top five.
For now, Alabama looks more like a potential lower playoff seed than a preseason top-five national championship favorite.
But that may make the 2026 season even more intriguing.
Alabama begins the year ranked No. 13, has only five returning starters by Athlon's definition and is handing the offense to a talented but inexperienced quarterback. Yet the roster remains filled with elite recruits, the transfer portal has added veteran help and the defense could be outstanding.
If everything comes together, Alabama could be considerably better in November than it is in September.
And in Tuscaloosa, that is ultimately what matters.
The expectation surrounding Alabama football has not changed: compete for the SEC, make the College Football Playoff and give yourself a chance to play for another national championship.
